Vintage at Goodwood

Vintage at GoodwoodFrom 13-15 August the gates will open to the very first Vintage at Goodwood; an amazing new annual festival celebrating five decades of British cool from the 1940s through to the 1980s.  Vintage at Goodwood will bring together and celebrate the music, fashion, film, art, dance and design from the most culturally influential era of the 20th Century to create an experience like no other.

As well as top fashions, dance, design, DJs, art, a Vintage High Street and great live music with dozens of top bands and artists performing – including The Faces, Sandie Shaw, Earth Wind and Fire, Heaven 17 and Joy Division – Vintage at Goodwood will have period vehicles galore.  Classic cars and bikes, hot rods, scooters, commercial vehicles, camper vans and caravans will be on display, with popular and desirable vehicles representing each decade, from the 1940s through to the 1980s.

From the 1940s expect to see popular family cars from Ford, Austin and Morris, as well as more exotic Rolls-Royce and Jaguar models of the era.  From the 1950s, the ‘British is Best’ MGA and Vauxhall Velox will rub wing mirrors with taxis and GPO vans.  Many of Britain’s most iconic cars of the 1960s will be on hand, including the Jaguar E-Type, Aston Martin DB5 and pioneering Mini, with motoring legends of the 1970s including the Ford Capri, Triumph 2500 and Jaguar XJ6, amongst others.  The 1980s will include an Austin Metro, Ford Sierra XR4i and Lotus Esprit Turbo.

Accompanying the inevitable oohs and aahs, and ‘my Dad had one of those’ comments, will be a wide selection of other classic vehicles to join the cars, including microcars of the 1950s and 60s, Mods scooters and Rockers motorcycles, American-inspired hot rods, plus everyday working vehicles of the era, including oil tankers, Land Rovers, police cars, fire engines, milk floats and buses.

In addition, touring caravans and camper vans of the 1940s-80s will be very much in evidence as part of the extensive Vintage at Goodwood camping area.  This year’s event will see a special celebration of the 60th anniversary of the legendary Volkswagen Type 2 Transporter, more commonly know in Britain as the VW Camper Van, with conversions by UK-based camper companies such as Dormobile and Danbury proving to be immensely popular over the decades.

Overall, the motoring side of Vintage at Goodwood will be a great appetite-whetter for the Goodwood Revival, which follows a month later, from 17-19 September, as the world’s most authentic historic motor race meeting set entirely in the romantic time capsule of the 1950s and 60s.
